tips for buying victorian and Edwardian christening robes
Most of the robes which we sell are Victorian and have been used and loved. We only sell items in excellent condition. However, this can include items which have been repaired or have small imperfections. We always state in the item description any marks, repairs, etc. and show them in close up photos. Obviously the condition of an item is reflected in its price.
Please bear in mind that Victorian babies were smaller than infants today! We set out the actual measurement of each robe from underarm to underarm. In general these should fit babies up to 6 months for baptism but please do check (perhaps discreetly against a favourite top!). Most of the robes fasten with drawstrings at the back so there is some leeway. If buying for the eldest child in a family, then clearly the robes can be passed to siblings and cousins and we love to see photos of these lovely robes being worn and brought to life again.
Our gift items are mainly Victorian and Edwardian silver - with hallmarks and the makers' marks clearly photgraphed. In our opinion, all items are suitable to mark the birth, naming or baptism of a child. Certain items like inkwells and dressing table boxes are suitable for older children at confirmation or coming of age. Again these items have survived a century or so - they may have small imperfections, which is part of the charm of collecting We will point out any marks or 'dings' in the description.
Above all, we will never sell an item which we would not be thrilled for our families to wear or receive.
